Phialemonium obovatum Keratitis after Penetration Injury of the Cornea

چکیده
Phialemonium keratitis is a very rare case and we encountered a case of keratitis caused by Phialemonium obovatum (P. obovatum) after penetrating injury to the cornea. This is the first case report in the existing literature. A 54-year-old male was referred to us after a penetration injury, and prompt primary closure was performed. Two weeks after surgery, an epithelial defect and stromal melting were observed near the laceration site. P. obovatum was identified, and then identified again on repeated cultures. Subsequently, Natacin was administered every two hours. Amniotic membrane transplantation was performed due to a persistent epithelial defect and impending corneal perforation. Three weeks after amniotic membrane transplantation, the epithelial defect had completely healed, but the cornea had turned opaque. Six months after amniotic membrane transplantation, visual acuity was light perception only, and corneal thinning and diffuse corneal opacification remained opaque. A rare case of Phialemonium obovatum keratitis
Purpose We report a rare case of Phialemonium obovatum fungal keratitis in a patient sustaining a corneal laceration from impact with a piece of moldy plaster. Observations The patient was treated with topical voriconazole with resolution of active keratitis and formation of a stromal scar. The patient's final visual acuity was 20/20 in the affected eye. Conclusions and importance There is ...
متن کاملTraumatic Acremonium atrogriseum keratitis following laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis.
A 52-year-old man underwent bilateral laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis. Eight months later, he sustained a penetrating corneal injury to the left eye. A dense white infiltrate, unresponsive to antimicrobial therapy, developed in the corneal stroma. Corneal biopsy and eventual penetrating keratoplasty were performed, and both specimens demonstrated fungal elements with branching, septate hy...
متن کاملFatal endocarditis in a neonate caused by the dematiaceous fungus Phialemonium obovatum: case report and review of the literature.
Phialemonium species are grouped by most authorities among the dematiaceous fungi. Like several other darkly pigmented fungi, they appear to be an emerging cause of human disease, especially in the immunocompromised host. As numbers of immunocompromised patients increase, the trend of unusual fungi emerging as new pathogens is set to continue. Previous experience suggests that reports of rare f...
متن کاملMolecular and phenotypic characterization of Phialemonium and Lecythophora isolates from clinical samples.
Several members of the fungal genera Phialemonium and Lecythophora are occasional agents of severe human and animal infections. These species are difficult to identify, and relatively little is known about their frequency in the clinical setting. The objective of this study was to characterize morphologically and molecularly, on the basis of the analysis of large-subunit ribosomal DNA sequences...
متن کاملRole of Pseudomonas aeruginosa ExsA in penetration through corneal epithelium in a novel in vivo model.
PURPOSE The scarified cornea keratitis model was modified to study Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection of healing corneal epithelium. The new model was then used to study the role of ExsA, a transcriptional activator of P. aeruginosa, in bacterial penetration through injured and healing corneal epithelia. METHODS Scratch-injured corneas of C57BL/6 mice were allowed to heal for 0, 6, 9, or 12 hou...
